Jonathan David "Jon" Good (December 7, 1985) is an American professional wrestler and actor, currently signed to WWE on the Raw brand under the ring name Dean Ambrose.

In WWE, Ambrose is a one-time WWE Champion, a two-time Intercontinental Champion, and a one-time United States Champion, with his 351-day United States Championship reign being the third-longest in history and a company record within WWE (who acquired the title upon purchasing World Championship Wrestling in 2001). He was also the 2016 Money in the Bank ladder match winner and successfully cashed in his contract to become WWE World Heavyweight Champion. From 2011, Ambrose competed in WWE developmental territory Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW), before joining the WWE main roster in 2012 as a member of the The Shield with Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins. Ambrose has headlined multiple pay-per-view events for WWE and made his acting debut in the WWE Studios production 12 Rounds 3: Lockdown (2015).

Professional wrestling career[]

On January 20, 2006, Ambrose teamed with Brad Attitude in a tag team match against MNM in a losing effort. This match was taped for WWE Velocity.

Dean appeared at house shows on December 16 and 17, 2011, losing to Daniel Bryan. On December 19, he lost to Ted DiBiase in a dark match prior to Raw. On March 4, 2012, Ambrose beat Drew McIntyre at a house show in Albany, Georgia, marking his first win in front of a main WWE crowd.

The Shield (2012–2014)[]

Ambrose made his main roster debut on November 18, 2012 at the Survivor Series pay-per-view alongside Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins, where they assaulted Ryback during the triple-threat main event for the WWE Championship, leading to CM Punk pinning John Cena to retain his title.

The trio declared themselves "The Shield" and vowed to rally against "injustice" while denying that they were working for Punk, but would routinely emerge from the crowd to attack Punk's adversaries such as Ryback, The Miz, Kane and Daniel Bryan, who had attempted to save Kane. This led to a Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match being set up for the TLC pay-per-view pitting the three men of the Shield against Ryback and Team Hell No (Kane and Bryan), which Ambrose, Reigns and Rollins won in their debut match. The Shield continued to aid Punk after TLC; during Punk and Ryback's TLC match for the WWE Championship on the January 7 episode of Raw, they attacked Ryback, which resulted in Punk retaining his title. During the Royal Rumble event where The Rock challenged for Punk's WWE Championship, match, a blackout occurred and the Rock was attacked in the darkness by unknown assailants, directly leading to Punk pinning Rock; the announcers blamed the Shield for the attack. The match was later restarted with Rock winning. The next day on Raw, the Shield attacked and laid out John Cena; Sheamus and Ryback suffered the same fate when they attempted to save Cena. Later in the show, it was revealed through footage played by Vince McMahon that Punk and/or his manager Paul Heyman had been paying the Shield and Brad Maddox to work for them all along. This set up a six-man tag team match at Elimination Chamber, which the Shield won. At WrestleMania 29, The Shield beat Randy Orton, Sheamus, and Big Show in a six-man tag-team match when Ambrose pinned Orton. On the April 22nd edition of Raw, the Shield defeated Team Hell No and The Undertaker in a six-man tag-team match. Ambrose wrestled his first singles match in the WWE on the April 26 edition of SmackDown, losing via submission to The Undertaker. However, immediately after the match Ambrose and the rest of the Shield would viciously attack Undertaker, beating him down with chairs and putting him through the announcers' table. On the April 29 episode of RAW, The Shield defeated Kane, Daniel Bryan and John Cena in a six-man tag team match. On the May 3 episode of SmackDown, Ambrose defeated Kane with a headlock driver.

On May 13 in an episode of RAW, The Shield suffered their first loss in a Six-Man Elimination Tag Team Match by disqualification when Rollins and Reigns (who were already eliminated) attacked John Cena while he was performing an STF submission hold on Dean Ambrose. On May 19 at Extreme Rules, Ambrose defeated Kofi Kingston to win the United States Championship, his first singles title in WWE. Later on that night, Rollins and Reigns defeated Team Hell No in a tag team tornado match to capture the WWE Tag Team Championships, thus giving all three members of The Shield championship gold. Ambrose made his first televised title defense on the following episode of SmackDown, losing to Kingston via disqualification after Reigns and Rollins interfered, but retaining the title as a result. The Shield would continue their assault on Kingston until Randy Orton and Sheamus made the save. Theodore Long then came out to set up a six-man tag team match that ended with Ambrose pinning Kingston for the win. Three days later on Raw, Ambrose defeated Kingston again to retain his title. At WWE Payback, Ambrose scored a countout victory over Kane to retain the United States Championship. On June 17, edition of RAW, he received a disqualification loss against Kane after Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins attacked Kane during the rematch for United States Championship. At Money in the Bank, Ambrose competed in the World Heavyweight Championship Money in the Bank ladder match, which he almost won with the help of Rollins and Reigns however he was unsuccessful in winning losing to Damien Sandow. Ambrose retained his United States Championship at SummerSlam by disqualification when The Shield speared Rob Van Dam. Afterwards, Ambrose would begin a feud with Dolph Ziggler when Ziggler disagreed with Triple H's management of WWE. On September 15 during the Night of Champions pay-per-view, Ambrose successfully defended his title by defeating Ziggler. The following night on Raw, Ambrose would lose to Ziggler in a non-title match, which lead to another title defense later in the week on SmackDown, but Ambrose retained the championship when Reigns and Rollins interfered. On the October 16 Episode of WWE Main Event, Ambrose defeated Ziggler to retain his United States title. Later that month, on October 27, at the WWE Hell in a Cell pay-per-view, in a title match, Ambrose was defeated by Big E Langston by count-out, therefore retaining his United States Championship. On December 15th at TLC, the Shield would lose to CM Punk in a 3-on-1 handicap match. Ambrose was accidentally speared by Roman Reigns allowing Punk to win the match.

On the 10 February 2014 episode of Raw, Ambrose's open challenge for his title was answered by Mark Henry, in which Ambrose only retained his title upon disqualification due to the Shield's interference; Reigns followed up by defeating Henry without interference on the next Raw. At the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view, the Shield lost to the Wyatt Family; during the match, Ambrose and Bray Wyatt brawled into the crowd, but Wyatt returned to the ring with no sign of Ambrose, which caused Rollins and Reigns to be outnumbered and overwhelmed. On the March 3 Raw, the Shield lost a rematch with the Wyatt Family when the Shield's poor teamwork led to Rollins walking out during the match; Rollins claimed that he had enough of being the glue holding the group together. However, The Shield quickly got back on the same page and began a feud with Kane, turning all members of The Shield faces in the process. During this feud, Kane was joined by the New Age Outlaws to battle The Shield in a six-man tag-team match at WrestleMania XXX, which The Shield won.

On the Raw after WrestleMania, The Shield officially severed ties with The Authority when Kane revealed that Triple H had coordinated the attack on them several weeks prior. As a result, The Shield attacked the entire Authority, protecting new WWE World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan, thus solidifying their face turn. The next week, Triple H placed The Shield in an 11-on-3 handicap match; following the match, The Shield was attacked by a reunited Evolution.

On Monday April 28, 2014, Ambrose marked 344 days as U.S. Champion. This made him the longest reigning U.S. Champion under the WWE banner, surpassing Montel Vontavious Porter's previous record of 343 days set in 2007-2008. On May 4th at Extreme Rules 2014, The Shield beat Evolution in a Six Man Tag Team Match. On May 5, after 351 days, Ambrose lost the title to Sheamus after being forced to defend it in a 20 man battle royal. He was the last wrestler eliminated. On the next SmackDown, Ambrose failed to regain the championship in a singles match against Sheamus.

Feud with Seth Rollins (2014–2015)[]

The Shield once again defeated Evolution at Payback. The next night on Raw, Batista left Evolution, prompting Triple H to initiate "Plan B" in his quest to destroy the Shield; this involved Rollins turning on Ambrose and Reigns, subsequently aligning himself with Triple H. The following week on SmackDown, Ambrose faced Bray Wyatt for a spot in the Money in the Bank match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, but lost due to a distraction from Rollins. As Ambrose and Reigns quietly separated, Ambrose debuted new ring attire and new entrance music. After being added to the Money in the Bank ladder match at Money in the Bank at Rollins' request, Ambrose lost the match when Kane attacked him to help Rollins win. Ambrose was scheduled to face Rollins at Battleground, but Ambrose was ejected from the arena by Triple H. Later that night, Rollins came out and announced that he had won their match by forfeit. Ambrose would then burst into the ring and attack Rollins and a vicious brawl ensued where both men had to be pulled apart by both The Authority and security. Rollins was then shown leaving the arena into the parking lot, where Ambrose was hiding in the trunk of a car and attempted to attack Rollins with a tire iron before Rollins managed to drive away. Ambrose and Rollins eventually fought at SummerSlam in a Lumberjack match, where Ambrose lost.

During an interview on the following Raw, Ambrose made Rollins the victim of a surprise Ice Bucket Challenge and beating. Triple H decided to have them fight in a SummerSlam rematch with the WWE Universe voting on the stipulation; the vote was made for a Falls Count Anywhere Match. Ambrose was almost closing in on a victory when Kane (who had been sitting ringside) once again interfered and set up Ambrose for Rollins's Curb Stomp through a pile of concrete blocks next to the announce table. Rollins was given the win via knockout and Ambrose was stretchered out of the arena. Ambrose refused treatment and went missing shortly after. The storyline was put to place to allow Ambrose's absence on television in order to film 12 Rounds 3: Lockdown. He returned at Night of Champions on September 21, attacking Rollins. On the October 13 episode of Raw, Ambrose defeated John Cena in a Contract on a Pole match to earn the opportunity to face Rollins in a Hell in a Cell match at the event of the same name. Following weeks of Ambrose attacking Rollins, the duo faced off in a Hell in a Cell match at the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view in October; Rollins won the match when Ambrose was attacked by Bray Wyatt. The next few weeks saw Ambrose and Wyatt taunting and attacking each other in both backstage and in-ring segments, with Wyatt claiming that he could "fix" Ambrose, leading to a match at Survivor Series. Ambrose lost the match by disqualification after utilizing weapons, including a table. This led to a TLC match between the two at TLC: Tables, Ladders and Chairs in December. During the match, a television monitor blew up in Ambrose's face, causing Wyatt to ultimately win the match. On Raw the night after, Ambrose stated that his feud with Wyatt was not yet over and at Tribute to the Troops, Ambrose defeated Wyatt in a Boot Camp match. The feud would continue when Wyatt attacked Ambrose during his US Title match with Rusev. At the Royal Rumble, Ambrose entered the Rumble match at number 25. He managed one elimination before being eliminated by Big Show and Kane.

On January 19 edition of Raw, Ambrose defeated Bad News Barrett. In the following weeks, Ambrose demanded a match for the Intercontinental Championship, but Barrett declined. On the February 16th edition of Raw, after Barrett defeated Damien Mizdow, Ambrose attacked Barrett by tying his hands around the ring post, forced him to sign the contract and had Barrett defend his title against him at Fastlane. At Fastlane, Barrett retained the championship, after the referee disqualified Ambrose. Ambrose continued his assault on Barrett and eventually left with the Intercontinental Championship in his possession. At WrestleMania 31, Ambrose participated in a seven-man ladder match for the championship, but lost. On the April 2 episode of SmackDown, Ambrose fought Luke Harper to a no contest after Harper put Ambrose through a table. On the April 13 episode of Raw, Ambrose attacked Harper after Harper lost to Ryback by disqualification. On the April 20 episode of Raw, Ambrose and Harper once again fought to a no contest. At Extreme Rules, Ambrose jumped into a car right before Harper drove it out of the arena. Two matches after would continue and end before Ambrose and Harper returned during a backstage segment with The New Day celebrating winning the tag team titles. After returning to the ring, Ambrose defeated Harper in his first singles victory on pay-per-view since the Shield split up. The next day on Raw, Ambrose was in the King of the Ring tournament, but did not make it to the second round after Dolph Ziggler attacked Dean's opponent Sheamus.

On the May 4 episode of Raw, Ambrose defeated the WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins, and as per pre-stipulation by Kane, Ambrose was added to the WWE World Heavyweight Championship match at Payback, a fatal four-way match also including Randy Orton and Roman Reigns, and Ambrose's first opportunity for a world title. However, at the event, Ambrose failed to win the title. The next night on Raw, Ambrose was granted another shot at the title at Elimination Chamber by The Authority after he threatened to put Rollins through cinderblocks, just as Rollins had done to him eight months earlier. At Elimination Chamber, however, he ultimately failed as, while he won the match, it was via disqualification, so Seth Rollins retained once more. Despite the loss, Ambrose took the championship with him while escaping from the Authority with Roman Reigns. Ambrose would then challenge Rollins to a Ladder Match for the title at Money in the Bank, which he lost.

After Money in the Bank, Ambrose continued teaming with Reigns, and eventually helped him in his feud with Bray Wyatt after Luke Harper reunited with Wyatt. On the August 6 edition of SmackDown, Reigns challenged Wyatt to a tag team match at SummerSlam, with Reigns and Ambrose facing Wyatt and Harper, which Wyatt accepted. At SummerSlam, Ambrose and Reigns defeated Wyatt and Harper. On the August 24 episode of Raw, Ambrose and Reigns fought Wyatt and Harper in a SummerSlam rematch. During the match, Braun Strowman made his WWE debut, joining the Wyatt Family and helping Harper and Wyatt attack Ambrose and Reigns. At Night of Champions, Ambrose teamed with Reigns and the newly-returning Chris Jericho to lose to the new Wyatt Family (Wyatt, Harper, and Strowman).

Following Seth Rollins injury, which forced him to vacate the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in November 2015, Ambrose entered a 16-man tournament to determine a new champion. After defeating Tyler Breeze, Dolph Ziggler, and Kevin Owens, Ambrose ultimately made it to the finals at Survivor Series, losing in a singles match to Roman Reigns.

Championship reigns and pursuits (2015–2017)[]

On the November 6 episode of SmackDown, Ambrose won a triple threat match that also consisted of Dolph Ziggler and Tyler Breeze to become the number one contender for Kevin Owens' Intercontinental Championship. He faced Owens at the TLC: Tables, Ladders and Chairs pay-per-view in a winning effort to capture the title. On the December 22, 2015 episode of SmackDown, Ambrose defeated Owens and Ziggler in a triple threat match to retain the Intercontinental title. On the January 7, 2016 episode of SmackDown, Ambrose and Owens faced off again for the title, but it was ruled a no-contest. At the 2016 Royal Rumble, Ambrose defeated Kevin Owens in a Last Man Standing Match to retain the Intercontinental Championship, and was the runner-up to the returning Triple H in the Royal Rumble match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. The following night on Raw, Ambrose was announced as part of a triple threat match against Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar at Fastlane, with the winner going on to face Triple H for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in the main event of WrestleMania 32. In the weeks preceding the match, Ambrose repeatedly taunted and goaded Lesnar. On the February 15 episode of Raw, Ambrose was forced to defend his Intercontinental Championship in a fatal five-way match and lost the championship when Kevin Owens pinned Tyler Breeze.

At Fastlane, Ambrose lost the match after being pinned by Reigns. The following day, Ambrose was attacked by Lesnar upon arriving at the arena. This set up a confrontation on Raw, where Ambrose would return driving an ambulance, only to be attacked again. Ambrose then challenged Lesnar to a street fight at Wrestlemania 32, which Paul Heyman accepted on Lesnar's behalf. On the February 29 episode of Raw, Ambrose interrupted Triple H, issuing a challenge for his WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Triple H would attack Ambrose after his match with Alberto Del Rio, before accepting his challenge. It would later be announced on WWE.com that the match would take place at WWE Roadblock on March 12. During the main event, Ambrose actually hit Dirty Deeds and pinned Triple H, but as Ambrose's foot was under the rope, it was declared void. After unsuccessfully attacking Triple H atop the announce table, Ambrose made it back to the ring at a count of 9, but was immediately pedigreed by Triple H, losing as a result.

Ambrose continued his feud with Lesnar cutting some promos on him, continuously challenging him. On the March 14 episode of Raw, hardcore legend Mick Foley gave Ambrose his signature barbed wire baseball bat. The following week on Raw, another hardcore legend, Terry Funk, gave Ambrose a chainsaw. On the March 24th edition of SmackDown, Lesnar challenged Ambrose to a fight, but instead The Wyatt Family entered. When The Wyatt Family was about to attack Lesnar, Ambrose came with a kendo stick and all five men brawled. The brawl ended with Lesnar giving an F-5 to Ambrose. At WrestleMania 32, Ambrose was defeated by Lesnar.

He then would start a feud with Chris Jericho after Jericho interrupted Ambrose leaving on SmackDown following a victory over Tyler Breeze. Tensions would rise when Shane McMahon replaced the 'Highlight Reel' with a new show the 'Ambrose Asylum' at Ambrose request. This would accumulate with a match at WWE Payback where Ambrose would emerge victorious, after twice breaking out of the Walls of Jericho. On the next edition of 'Ambrose Asylum' Dean Ambrose invited Stephanie McMahon, who was controlling Raw. Ambrose asked her if she was 'the same old Stephanie we all knew'. Instead of giving a straight answer Stephanie McMahon cancelled the 'Ambrose Asylum' and replaced it with the 'Highlight Reel', which caused a brawl between Ambrose and Jericho. After Jericho destroyed Ambrose's potted plant from his talk show segment (named "Mitch"), Ambrose ripped apart Jericho's light-up ring jacket. On the May 16 episode of Raw, Ambrose challenged Jericho to the first ever "Asylum Match" at Extreme Rules, which Jericho accepted. At the event, Ambrose would win after delivering Dirty Deeds to Jericho onto a pile of thumbtacks.

On the May 23 episode of Raw, Ambrose defeated Dolph Ziggler to qualify for the Money in the Bank ladder match on June 19, which he ended up winning. Later that same night, he cashed-in his briefcase and successfully defeated long-time rival and former stablemate Seth Rollins—who had just defeated Roman Reigns—to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship for the first time. After the number one contender's match between Rollins and Reigns ended in a double countout the next night on Raw, Shane McMahon, on Ambrose's request, announced a triple threat match for the title between Ambrose, Reigns, and Rollins at Battleground. By June 29, the WWE World Heavyweight Championship was renamed back to the WWE Championship. On the July 18 episode of Raw, a match for the WWE Championship ended controversially between Rollins and Ambrose in a double pin. Stephanie McMahon announced that Rollins had won the match and was the new champion. After Raw went off-air, Shane McMahon announced that Ambrose had won the match and was still the champion. Lilian Garcia then officially announced that due to the double pin, the match was a draw, and as a result Ambrose remained as the champion. On July 19 at the 2016 WWE draft, Ambrose was drafted to SmackDown, being the brand's first draft pick and bringing the championship with him. At Battleground on July 24, Ambrose successfully retained his title against Rollins and Reigns by pinning the latter. Ambrose was then scheduled to defend the WWE World Championship, which was now exclusive to SmackDown, against Dolph Ziggler at SummerSlam. At the event, Ambrose successfully defended against Ziggler. His next title defense was at Backlash, where he lost the title to AJ Styles after Styles hit Ambrose with a low blow while the referee was down, and executed a Styles Clash. On the November 1 episode of SmackDown, after defeating Styles in a non-title bout, Ambrose became the number one contender for the WWE World Championship and was later announced to face AJ Styles in a Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match at TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs on December 4, 2016. Before that, however, he was put in the SmackDown team against Raw in the traditional Survivor Series Match at the titular pay-per-view, along with Styles, Randy Orton, Bray Wyatt, and SmackDown Commissioner Shane McMahon. At the event, Team SmackDown would win the match, but Ambrose was the first one eliminated after AJ Styles attacked him, leading to Braun Strowman getting the pin. At TLC, Ambrose was defeated by Styles after James Ellsworth initially appeared to help Ambrose but pushed him off the ladder into the tables thus allowing Styles to retain the championship. On the following episode of SmackDown, Ambrose failed to capture the Intercontinental Championship from The Miz after Ellsworth appeared trying to help Ambrose win, but accidentally distracted him and cost him the title. The following week, Ambrose competed in a four-way elimination match to determine the number one contender for the again renamed WWE Championship, which was won by Dolph Ziggler.

Ambrose began a feud with The Miz after Renee Young interviewed Miz following his successful title defense against Apollo Crews. After Young asked Miz about his "obsession" with Ambrose, Miz sarcastically responded by revealing Young and Ambrose's real life relationship, prompting her to slap Miz. The following week, Ambrose attacked Miz during his interview with Young with his intention of challenging Miz for the Intercontinental Championship. On the January 3 episode of SmackDown, Ambrose defeated Miz to win his second Intercontinental Championship after the referee banned Maryse from the ringside due to a interference.

Storyline with Seth Rollins and leaving the company (2017–2019)[]

Ambrose continued to feud with The Miz, leading up to a rematch for the Intercontinental Championship at Great Balls of Fire on July 9, where he lost after interference by the Miztourage (Curtis Axel and Bo Dallas). The next night on Raw, Ambrose attacked The Miz and the Miztourage, but due to being outnumbered, former stablemate and long-time rival Seth Rollins saved Ambrose. Ambrose and Rollins eventually reunited and defeated Cesaro and Sheamus at SummerSlam to capture the Raw Tag Team Championship, making Ambrose both a Triple Crown and Grand Slam champion in the process. Ambrose and Rollins then reunited with Reigns on the October 9 episode of Raw, reforming The Shield. The Shield was due to face the team of Braun Strowman, Cesaro, Kane, The Miz and Sheamus at TLC in a 5-on-3 handicap Tables, Ladders and Chairs match, but Reigns was replaced by Kurt Angle over an illness concern. Ambrose, Rollins, and Angle would go on to win the match. Ambrose and Rollins lost the tag titles back to Cesaro and Sheamus on the November 6 episode of Raw after a distraction from The New Day (Big E, Kofi Kingston, and Xavier Woods), thus ending their reign at 78 days. This led to a match between The Shield and The New Day at Survivor Series on the following month, which the former won. In December 2017, Ambrose suffered a triceps injury, reportedly rendering him out of action for nine months.

In August 2018, Ambrose returned to assist Rollins in winning the Intercontinental Championship at SummerSlam. The following night on Raw, Ambrose and Rollins aided Universal Champion Roman Reigns in attacking Braun Strowman when the latter attempted to cash-in his Money in the Bank contract, once again reuniting the Shield. At Hell in a Cell, Ambrose and Rollins were unsuccessful to beat Dolph Ziggler and Drew McIntyre for the Raw Tag Team Championship. In October, The Shield defeated Ziggler, McIntyre, and Strowman at the Super Show-Down event in Melbourne. Two nights later on Raw, they were defeated by the same trio in a rematch. After the match, a frustrated Ambrose walked away from his teammates.

On the October 22 episode of Raw, after Reigns announced his real-life leukemia and relinquished the Universal Championship, Ambrose and Rollins defeated Ziggler and McIntyre to capture the Raw Tag Team Championships for the second time in the main event. However, Ambrose immediately attacked Rollins after the match, turning heel for the first time since March 2014. Two weeks later on Raw, Ambrose attacked Rollins again, after the latter lost the tag titles in a handicap match against AOP (Akam and Rezar). The following week, Ambrose burned his Shield vest and explained that being part of the group had made him weak. He would continue to taunt Rollins over the following weeks by stalking him, getting vaccinated against what he perceived to be Rollins' "illness", and ordering his own personal SWAT team to attack Rollins, subsequently proclaiming himself as "The Moral Compass of WWE." Ambrose defeated Rollins at TLC, beginning his third Intercontinental Championship reign. Throughout the following weeks, he successfully defended his title against Tyler Breeze, Apollo Crews, and Rollins. However, he would lose the championship to Bobby Lashley on the January 14, 2019 episode of Raw, in a triple threat match also involving Rollins.

Ambrose entered the 2019 Royal Rumble match at the namesake event on January 27, but was eliminated by Aleister Black. The following night on Raw, Ambrose interrupted Rollins, who had won the Royal Rumble the night before, and Triple H, proclaiming that Rollins never defeated him clean without interference and provoking Triple H into booking them in a match, in which Ambrose was subsequently defeated. After the match, Ambrose attempted to cut a promo but was interrupted by Nia Jax and Tamina, with the former attacking Ambrose before Ambrose simply decided to leave rather than exact revenge. A few hours after Raw went off-air, it was reported that Ambrose had notified Vince McMahon that he would not be renewing his contract with WWE and would be leaving the company shortly after WrestleMania 35. WWE subsequently confirmed his decision in a released statement. It was reported that Ambrose had been offered an improved contract by WWE, which he turned down due to long-standing frustration with the creative direction of his character and a particular dislike of the "hokey" material that he had been given.
